Utilities contractor Cenergist has been contracted to carry out an initiative for Leeds City Council called ‘clustering for warmth’. The £24m plumbing project will see Cenergist design, build and deliver six ground source heat pumps [GSHPs] for 26 tower blocks in Leeds. The deadline for the district heating network clusters is 2024, and the aim is to provide cheaper and more environmentally friendly heating. Council-owned tower blocks in Armley, Seacroft, Gipton, Harehills, Killingbeck and Little London will have upgraded heating and hot water systems.
Councillor and deputy leader of Leeds City Council Debra Coupar, said: “By upgrading some of our coldest homes to make them fit for the future, this ambitious scheme will not only help reduce fuel poverty but crucially also enable thousands of tenants to save money on their energy bills.”
The director of energy infrastructure at Cenergist,Dan Ludgate said: “In deploying Cenergist’s GSHP solutions, not only can we help Leeds City Council achieve its goal in decarbonising the city, but we can also help to serve the needs of the community, by providing significant bill savings for residents”.
Sustainable and cost efficient, heat pump technology is emerging as a solution which can make a significant difference. GSHPs are geothermal systems which extract naturally produced heat from below the ground. They are perfect for under floor heating, central heating and hot water.
