You may know that last week was Gas Safety Week, held annually to raise awareness about how to stay ‘gas safe’. The initiative is run by the Gas Safe Register in an effort to inform landlords and home owners about gas and gas appliances. Here are six tips on how to ensure that you, your family or your tenants are protected:-
1. Make sure that any person you allow to carry out work on your gas appliances is Gas Safe registered. This includes fitting and installing, servicing or repairing, you may feel uncomfortable asking but you are well within your rights. If you’re still not sure, check the Gas Safe Register UK online or call 0800 408 5500.
2. If they show you a Gas Safe Register ID card, read both the front and back, you can check if they are qualified to do the particular job you need.
3. Get any gas appliances you have serviced and checked each year, and if your home is rented get a copy of your landlord’s Gas Safety Record.
4. The signs of carbon monoxide [CO] poisoning are headaches, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, collapse and loss of consciousness. Faulty gas appliances heighten the risk of gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, fires and explosions.
5. Examine your gas appliances for signs that they are malfunctioning, such as black marks or stains on the appliance or around it. Also lazy yellow flames, and excess condensation in the room.
6. An audible carbon monoxide alarm will alert you if it detects poisonous CO in the home, so it makes good sense to fit one.
Remember it is against the law for anyone to tamper with or attempt to install or fix a gas appliance unless they are a Gas Safe Registered engineer.
